Accident victim who jumped from vehicle dies

A local woman who was injured after jumping from a burning, moving vehicle has died at an Indianapolis hospital.

Karlee Katelynn Hurt, 22, Columbus, died Wednesday at IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. She had been listed in critical condition at the hospital in the days before her death, according to her family.

Hurt was a passenger in a vehicle traveling south on U.S. 31 south of County Road 300E at 10:29 a.m. Oct. 18, Bartholomew County deputies said. The driver of the vehicle, Robert A. Shaw II, said he saw smoke coming from the interior of the vehicle and as he slowed to stop, Hurt jumped out while it was still moving at about 30 mph, according to deputies.

Hurt had moved to Columbus to live with her mother Shawna Richey and her spouse Audra Richey, family members said.

She was working on finding employment and being a mom for her two little boys, 3-year-old Lyric Hurt of Scottsburg and 4-year-old Hayden Fink, Uniontown, Audra Richey said on Sunday. The family described Hurt as an “amazing mother” to her two little boys.

In her obituary, family members said Hurt was “a warrior who had been fighting for her life for seven days” after the accident.

Hurt attended Austin (Ind.) High School and also attended New Life Community Church, in Nashville, Indiana, according to the family.

Her funeral is being held at 10 a.m. today at the Collins Funeral Home, Scottsburg, with internment in Combs Cemetery, near Austin.
