Two arrested after suspicious activity behind gas station

NORTH VERNON, Ind. — North Vernon police arrested two people after suspicious activity was reported behind a gas station.

Police were sent to the station Wednesday after Sgt. Andrew Richmond saw three people go behind the gas station, and when he went to investigate, two ran from the scene, police said.

Richmond was able to stop Nicole A. Stephens, 26, North Vernon, and learned an arrest warrant for failing to appear was pending out of Jennings County, police said.

Officer Shane Trepanier located a second individual who ran behind a nearby hair salon. Identified as William F. Baugh, 28, Scipio, he also had an active parole warrant for his arrest, police said.

Trepanier was then called to an address on South Gum Street where a resident said a person matching Baugh’s description had run through his back yard, police said. Trapanier found 7.5 grams of methamphetamine packaged in separate bags, a bag of prescription pills not in their prescription container and drug paraphernalia, police said.

Stephens was arrested on the warrant and Baugh was arrested on preliminary charges of dealing in methamphetamine, possession of methamphetamine, legend drug violation and possession of paraphernalia, in addition to the warrant, police said. Both were taken to the Jennings County Jail, jail officials said.
