‘Baby Doll’ wraps up film series

IUPUC will conclude its fall film series with a free showing of "Baby Doll," a controversial movie from 1956, at 3 p.m. Monday at YES Cinema, 328 Jackson St.

The story centers on Archie Lee Meighan (Karl Malden), a failing cotton gin owner who is married to Baby Doll (Carroll Baker), a 19-year old whose father arranged the marriage for financial reasons. However, Archie’s business rival, Silva Vacarro (Eli Wallach), plots to seduce Baby Doll away from him.

The film was nominated for four Oscars and is categorized today as a black comedy.

IUPUC’s fall film series is part of a special topics course on Tennessee Williams and Film taught by Lisa Siefker-Bailey. In the class, students compare and contrast the film adaptations of Williams’ works to discover and question issues often softened for mainstream consumption.

The screening is open to the public.
