State police arrest 2 on meth charges

The Indiana State Police-Versailles Criminal Patrol Team arrested two people in Bartholomew and Jennings counties on drug charges and seized nearly five ounces of crystal methamphetamine in the process.

Patrick R. Sweany, 48, of North Vernon, and Jose Luis Hernandez-Barrera, 47, of Columbus, were arrested Friday.

Troopers first located Sweany, who was wanted on a Jennings County warrant for possession of methamphetamine. When Sweany was taken into custody, police found about one ounce of suspected methamphetamine in his possession, and other drug-related items, said Sgt. Stephen Wheeles, public information officer for the Versailles District.

Sweany was transported to the Jennings County Jail, where he was booked at 12:33 a.m. on new charges of dealing methamphetamine and possession of methamphetamine, and the previous possession of methamphetamine charge. He is being held in lieu of $26,050 bond, according to jail officials.

Later Friday, troopers responded to 2606 Hawpatch Drive, in Columbus, after being notified of possible drug activity at the residence. After arriving at the residence, troopers located about 3.5 ounces of suspected crystal methamphetamine in the home. Hernandez-Barrera, 47, was arrested at the scene, Wheeles said.

He was transported to the Bartholomew County Jail where he was booked at 6:41 p.m. on charges of dealing methamphetamine and possession of methamphetamine. He is being held in lieu of $200,000 bond, jail officials said.
