Observed from Dec. 26 through Jan. 1, Kwanzaa is a Swahili word that means “first” and signifies the first fruits of the harvest. SURVIVING THE HOLIDAYS: A MODERN BUDDHIST PERSPECTIVE, 6:30 p.m. Dec. 13, Bartholomew County Public Library, 536 Fifth St. For many, the “most wonderful time of the year” is accompanied by stress and, for many, feelings of loneliness and loss. Tom Mitchell, from Kadampa Meditation Center Bloomington, introduces practical methods, derived from Buddha’s teachings, through which everyone — Buddhists and non-Buddhists alike — can transform whatever arises over the holidays into causes of happiness for oneself and others.

Navigate the hills of Brown County during this unique orienteering race in which participants use a map and compass to locate checkpoints. Items needed are: New and gently used blankets, towels and rugs; unopened dog and cat food; dog and cat toys; dog and cat beds; new and gently used dog collars; new and gently used break-away cat collars; dog leashes; dog and cat treats and dog and cat shampoo. A Christmastime favorite, this 1947 film centers around a homeless New Yorker who, along with other hobos, winters in the townhouse of a wealthy family while they live in Florida.
