Local artist’s ornament at state museum

Longtime Columbus artist Robert Burris has created a Columbus-themed paper Christmas ornament for the towering tree at the Indiana State Museum, 650 W. Washington St., in downtown Indianapolis.

The tree will have ornaments representing 89 of the 92 Indiana counties through Jan. 6. Jan Banister, curator of Gallery 506 at the Columbus Area Visitors Center, recommended Burris for the work.

The 85-year-old painter created a six-sided paper piece featuring six Columbus scenes that he painted: The Commons, Bartholomew County Courthouse, Large Arch, First Christian Church and Round Lake and the covered bridge at Mill Race Park.

"I consider it a special honor to be asked to create such a piece," Burris said.

Smaller paper copies of the ornament are available for $3 at the visitors center. Plus, a throw featuring The Commons and Courthouse scene is available for $64.50 at the visitors center.

The Indiana State Museum has a special meaning to Burris partly because its permanent art collection includes three pieces by Catherine Burris, his late wife, whose work still is well known in the area.
