Holiday arrives as county’s first baby of 2019

Bartholomew County’s first baby of 2019 has a first name that will forever remind her parents of this special time of year.

Holiday Clementine Cable, 7 pounds, 11 ounces, at 20.5 inches long, arrived at 11:51 a.m. Tuesday at Columbus Regional Hospital as Bartholomew County’s first baby of the new year.

She is the daughter of the Rev. Nic Cable, minister at Unitarian Universalist Church and his wife Hattie, who is an attorney for the Department of Child Services, Jennings County. The family lives in Columbus.

Holiday is the couple’s first child, and the first granddaughter on both sides of the family.

Nic Cable said the couple decided they didn’t want to know the gender of the baby in advance and found out it was a girl when she was delivered.

Although Holiday wasn’t due until next Saturday, which also happens to be Hattie’s birthday, the couple initially thought their first child might actually be one of the last babies born in 2018 instead of the first baby of 2019.

Hattie’s labor began at about 12:30 a.m. on New Year’s Eve, and continued through the morning of New Year’s Day at the hospital, the new father said just a few hours after Holiday’s birth.

“We were home for the first 20 hours,” Nic Cable said of when his wife went into labor. They went to the hospital at about 9 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, he said.

Holiday’s unusual first name came from the couple’s love of the holiday season, the minister said.

“We loved the name Holly and the Christmas kind of image and we love the holidays,” he said. “It’s always been a special time of year for us.”

As part of the celebration for the first baby of the year, Child Abuse Prevention of Bartholomew County, a division of Family Service, Inc., worked with local businesses to put together a basket full of gifts for the Cable family which will be presented to them.
