Granted, William Shakespeare’s works are far more than kids’ stuff. But many believe elements of his better-known plays can be understood by youngsters when the material is presented with humor and creativity. The Mill Race Theatre Company will perform the comic production “The Magical Mind of Billy Shakespeare” for a young audience at 6 p.m. Friday at The Commons, 300 Washington St. in downtown Columbus. The free production is part of the Columbus Area Arts Council’s long popular First Fridays For Families series for children. The show will highlight excerpts from three of the writer’s classic works. If you like to see history spread itself across the big screen, you might catch “Mary, Queen of Scots” at the nonprofit YES Cinema at 328 Jackson St. in downtown Columbus. In the film, the title character is Queen of France at 16 and widowed at 18. Mary Stuart then defies pressure to remarry as she goes home to her native Scotland to reclaim her rightful throne. But Scotland and England fall under the rule of Elizabeth I. According to various national media sources, the story of the dueling queens presented in the film is very much based in reality. Historians say that Queen Elizabeth I was intimidated by Mary due to her popularity with the English people. Tickets are $4 and $6. Information: yescinema.org
