Greencastle man arrested after I-65 high-speed pursuit

Indiana State Police arrested a Greencastle driver after he was accused of fleeing from a trooper during an attempted traffic stop on I-65 in Bartholomew County.

The incident happened at 12:25 a.m. Thursday when Trooper Jacob Tolle saw a vehicle traveling south on I-65 at a high rate of speed near the 67 mile marker, said Sgt. Stephen Wheeles, state police spokesman.

Tolle caught up to the red 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix and attempted to do a traffic stop on the vehicle near the 65 mile marker, Wheeles said. The vehicle, being driven by Richard Romandine III 39, Greencastle, Indiana continued southbound on I-65, continuing at high speeds, Wheeles said.

The Pontiac, which was not properly registered, struck a tire deflation device placed by the Seymour Police Department near the 50 mile marker, Wheeles said. The vehicle then came to a stop near the 47 mile marker in Jackson County.

Romandine exited the vehicle where he was then arrested, Wheeles said. A search of the vehicle revealed marijuana and drug paraphernalia, Wheeles said. Romandine was also found to have a suspended driver’s license, according to state police.

Romandine was taken to the Jackson County Jail on preliminary charges of resisting law enforcement in a vehicle, reckless driving, driving while suspended with a prior conviction, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Additional charges are possible, Wheeles said.

Tolle was assisted by other troopers from the Indiana State Police-Versailles Post, officers with the Seymour Police Department, Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, Scott County Sheriff’s Department, and Crothersville Police Department.
