Food and Drink Indiana aimed to be a tasty event

Diners will receive a taste of Hoosier hospitality at the free Food and Drink Indiana event Jan. 31 in the lecture hall at Columbus Learning Center, 4555 Central Ave.

The gathering at 6:30 p.m. is part of Ivy Tech Community College’s ongoing Columbus Past, Present and Future Series, according to Bethany Messersmith, the college’s library director.

Speakers will be Nichole and Derek Young of Oh Sweetie Specialty Treats at 3988 25th St. in Columbus; Rick Bush of Bush’s Market, 7301 E. 25th St. in Columbus; and Mike Spagnuolo of Bear Wallow Distillery at 4484 Old State Road 46 in Nashville.

Each will speak briefly about the past, present and future of their business. And each will bring free samples of some of the business’ products to try.

The Youngs probably will bring handcrafted ice pops, Nichole Young said.

“After all, that’s what we started with,” she said.

Messersmith mentioned the possibility that the event could be repeated every so often if it proves successful.

“Since it’s January and people may be dealing with the winter doldrums, we thought something like this with food and drink would be better than just watching something similar on TV,” she said.

Messersmith added that she wanted to present some variety by including Bush’s, known for products such as sausage, and Oh Sweetie for dessert-like offerings, and Bear Wallow for drinks.

The series has attracted 30 to 65 people per event for the gatherings now in their second season this year.
