Girl Scouts ready to open cookie ordering season

Staff Reports

Girl Scouts of Central Indiana will kick off the 2019 Girl Scout Cookie ordering season on Saturday.

Proceeds from the sale of eight different varieties of Girl Scout cookies are used to fund activities such as outdoor adventures, hands-on science and technology projects and community service.

As an additional incentive for sales this year, Indiana Girl Scouts may choose to use their “reward” for their cookie sales to provide shoes to children in Kenya, according to Deana Potterf, communications officer for the organization.

Girl Scouts may choose the shoe donation in place of a reward item they may have earned, which typically are something like a stuffed animal, sleeping bag or theme park tickets.

Shoes will be donated to the 120 students who attend the Hope School, located outside of several small villages in northern Kenya, Potterf said.

Cost for the cookies this year is $5 per box, with order deliveries being made the week of Feb. 4.

Varieties available this year will be Do-si-dos, Girl Scout S’mores, Samoas, Savannah Smiles, Tagalongs, Thin Mints, Toffee-tastic and Trefoils.

Girl Scouts will also be setting up booths at area supermarkets and stores for direct customer sales, Potterf said.

Again this year, Girl Scouts from around central Indiana will sell cookies for Operation: Cookie Drop. The Girl Scouts will ask customers to purchase additional boxes of cookies that will be distributed to soldiers stationed at military bases across central Indiana, to military veterans and for the first time this year, local first responders.

Last year, central Indiana scouts delivered 96,000 boxes to recipients as part of Operation: Cookie Drop.

Corporate sponsors for the Girl Scout cookie program are the American Dairy Association Indiana and Prairie Farms.
