Weather causes postponement of Saturday sporting events

Saturday morning’s snowfall led to the postponement of the Elementary Basketball League’s “Super Saturday,” as well as most of the events on the high school sports schedule.

The EBL championship games and cheer competition now will be Saturday at Columbus North High School. Richards will play Southside for the boys title at 11 a.m., and Mt. Healthy will face Parkside for the girls title at 12:30 p.m. The cheer competition will begin at 4 p.m.

“We were trying our best to get the games in today, but we always want to err on the side of student safety, and we felt like (postponing) was the best decision for student and family safety,” EBL director Dennis Pierce said.

Pierce said he drove from his home north of Columbus to Columbus East High School, where the games were to have been played. When he got there around 6 a.m., he received a call from Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp. operations director Brett Boezeman, who had been driving around town.

Those two joined superintendent Jim Roberts on a conference call on the phone, and Dr. Roberts mentioned that if it was a school day, they probably would have canceled school, so he recommended that they postpone the games.

“When I drove from my house to East, some of those roads had not been plowed,” Pierce said. “Driving from Mt. Healthy and some of those places would not have been good today. So with all of those factors, we decided to postpone.

Pierce said Southside principal Jeff Backmeyer and Richards principal Darin Sprong, who are part of the EBL executive council, also were consulted in the decision to postpone.

“Even if their teams weren’t playing, they would have been involved in the call,” Pierce said. “They just happened to have teams playing.”

Meanwhile, East’s boys basketball game at Seymour was postponed until Monday. The Olympians’ girls game at New Albany also was postponed, with a makeup date yet to be determined.

Hauser’s boys basketball game at Milan was postponed until Feb. 12. Edinburgh’s girls basketball home game with Southwestern (Shelby) was postponed until Saturday. South Decatur’s boys basketball game at Southwestern was postponed to Wednesday.

Decisions were made on Friday to postpone several other Saturday events. Among those, the Hoosier Hills Conference girls swimming and diving meet was rescheduled for Tuesday at Floyd Central, and the HHC wrestling tournament was moved to Wednesday at Jeffersonville. Conference Indiana wrestling was rescheduled for Friday at Bloomington North, and the Columbus North at Bloomington South girls basketball was moved to Saturday.

Also from Saturday postponements, the Jennings County at Bedford North Lawrence and Trinity Lutheran at Brownstown Central boys basketball games will be Tuesday, and the Jennings at Brownstown girls basketball game will be Jan. 21. The Western Indiana Conference wrestling tournament, which includes Brown County, will be Saturday at Edgewood.
