Jets fall to Pirates

HOPE — Hauser fell behind quickly to Greensburg early on and didn’t recover in a 68-33 girls basketball loss on Tuesday night.

The Pirates jumped out to a 13-0 lead in the first three minutes of the game. Jada Asher ended the run with a 3-pointer.

After Greensburg scored another basket, the Jets’ Hannah Johnson hit a jumper to make it 15-5. But the Pirates scored the last 10 points of the quarter to lead 25-5.

Greensburg extended the lead to 29-5 until Hauser’s Mykenzie Ault converted a triple from the left side that just rattled in to make it 29-8. After another basket by the Pirates, the Jets’ Taylor Henderson drained a 3-point shot deep from the right wing to make it 31-8. Greensburg then scored the last nine points of the first half to lead 40-11.

At the start of the second half, the Pirates scored the first 13 points before Hauser responded back with Johnson hitting her first 3 of the season to make the score 53-14.

“We didn’t take care of the ball. We didn’t get back on defense. Once we got down, I think we lost confidence,” Hauser coach Brad Hamilton said. “We fell behind 25-5, and we’re not the kind of team that is going to come back from that.”

One of the biggest positives the Jets (5-14) could take away from the game is their perimeter shooting. Hauser hit six shots from behind the arc and was only outscored by Greensburg (15-4) 28-22 in the second half.

“We played much better in the second half,” Hamilton said. “I told them before we headed out there that Greensburg is a really good team. We needed to play like we had nothing to lose.”

The Jets have two tough Mid-Hoosier Conference games coming up when they travel Thursday to Morristown and a have home game Tuesday against North Decatur before wrapping up the regular season Jan. 24 at Shelbyville.

For Hauser, nine players finished in the scoring column. Asher hit three 3-pointers and ended up with a team-high 10 points. Johnson added 9.

Greensburg was led by Aliyah Evans, who finished with a game-high 23 points.
