North gymnasts improve in win against Patriots

The Columbus North gymnasts appear to be headed in the right direction.

The Bull Dogs improved their team score for the second time in their two meets since the season opener Tuesday night in a 108.6-99.65 win against Owen Valley.

“We gave the girls a challenge to just pick up a tenth,” North co-coach Sandy Freshour said. “If every girl on the team picked up a tenth, then we would pick up a point for our team, and they worked really hard. We had some tougher judges tonight, so it was good to get their perspective on things.”

Freshman Emily Moore was headed to a possible score in the 38s, but fell twice on the floor and finished with a 37.15 to still win the all-around competition. Moore had won the vault (9.45), bars (9.35) and beam (9.7) before finishing seventh in the floor with an 8.65.

Senior Tova Edwards finished second on all four events and had her best all-around score of the season with a 36.125 to finish second. She scored 9.075 on the vault, 8.25 on the bars, 9.4 on the beam and 9.4 on the floor.

“Those are some of the best scores I’ve gotten,” Edwards said. “I just kind of stayed calm and didn’t think too much about everything.”

Ashley Niebrugge won the floor with a 9.55 and finished third in the all-around with a 34.075. Madi Edwards took fourth on the vault (8.775) and in the all-around (33.475).

Also for the Bull Dogs, Alayne Davis finished third on the bars (8.1), and Grace Ellis was fourth on the floor (9.0).

“Tonight, we really shined on beam,” North co-coach Bob Arthur said. “Floor has done its job all the time, but it is nice to know you can have one kid fall twice and still pull a good score out of it from your other kids. What we really need to focus on now are vault and bars because both of those events have some opportunity for improvements. We certainly haven’t peaked out yet.”
