City seeks nominees for Human Rights Commission

The Columbus City Council is seeking nominees from the city or Bartholomew County to serve on the Human Rights Commission.

The commission’s primary responsibility is to enforce the city’s anti-discrimination ordinance which prohibits discrimination in housing, employment, public accommodation, credit and education on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, age (over 40), disability, veteran status and familial status (housing only).

Commissioners serve three-year terms and the positions are unpaid. Commissioners are involved in an essay and art contest in the schools, an annual dinner, diversity dialogue circles and supporting Columbus Area Multi-Ethnic Organization. Six to eight hours of training is offered.

Those interested in serving should call the commission office at 812-376-2532 or TDD dial 711. Applications are available by emailing [email protected]. Deadline to apply is 5 p.m. Feb. 22.

Selected applicants will be notified to schedule an in-person interview with Tim Shuffett, City Council liaison to the commission.
