Video: Southbound I-65 lanes closed due to 5-vehicle crash involving semis

2:15 p.m. UPDATE: The southbound lanes of I-65 at the 54.5 mile marker in Jackson County remain closed as first responders continue to extinguish flames from the accident. Five vehicles, including multiple semis, were involved in the accident and it did result in fatalities, Indiana State Police said. Motorists are being directed off the southbound lanes of I-65 south of Columbus at the 64 mile marker at this time.

11:10 a.m. UPDATE:

First reponders have notified dispatch that the accident could involve as many as three fatalities. Indiana State Police are asking motorists to avoid the area as a lengthy delay for the road closing is anticipated.

11:05 a.m. UPDATE:

Indiana State Police are shutting down I-65 southbound at the 64 mile marker and sending traffic off the interstate due to extensive fire that is continuing at the accident scene at the 54.5 mile marker. State police are reporting that it will be an extremely lengthy road closing and motorists are advised to seek an alternate route.

10:30 A.M. UPDATE: First responders have requested an accident reconstructionist at the scene of a semi truck fire at the 54.5 mile marker, saying the accident is a suspected fatal accident. Some traffic is being directed off the interstate as both lanes of southbound I-65 in Jackson County remain closed at the accident scene.

JACKSON COUNTY — Indiana Department of Transportation has notified firefighters that there is a semi nearly full-engulfed in fire on southbound I-65 at the 54.5 mile marker, and other semis may be involved at the scene.

Indiana State Police are advising both southbound I-65 lanes are closed down at the 54.5 mile marker with a trooper describing it as a “massive fire.”
