Hauser student named to All-State Band makes school history

HOPE — A Hauser Jr.-Sr. High School senior is the first student in the school’s history to be selected for the Indiana All-State Band.

Eighteen-year-old Emily Jones, a clarinet player in the Hauser band, will perform at the 59th Annual All-State Festival March 8-10 at Purdue University.

“My band director, Mr. (Josh) Goodman, texted my mom at 10:30 at night on a Saturday night — I was already asleep — so I found out in the morning,” Jones said. “I was just really excited.”

Jones attended one of eight audition sites last fall where she was required to perform three music excerpts and demonstrate her sight reading skills.

The All-State Band was established in 1961 through the Indiana Band Masters Association. Auditions are open to Indiana students in their freshman through senior years.

Josh Goodman, who started directing the Hauser band in 2015, said students have auditioned in previous years but have never been selected to the band.

“It speaks volumes to the type of students we’ve had in this program,” Goodman said. “Emily is a testament to the type of student we pride ourselves on and the standards we hold our students to here.”

When students first walk into Goodman’s classroom, he wants them to know it’s a place where they are expected to work really hard and be rewarded for their hard work.

“Case in point with Emily getting this high honor,” he said.

Jones is one of four seniors in the Hauser High School band. She said she would like to continue to play in community bands and orchestras after high school.

Following graduation in May, Jones will attend Purdue University. She wants to be an actuary, which is a person who compiles and analyzes statistics and uses them to calculate insurance risks and premiums.
