State historian to talk about the Underground Railroad

HOPE — In the years prior to and during the Civil War, many slaves trying to escape traveled across Indiana seeking freedom.

Tonight, a state historian will reveal areas of south central Indiana involved in the “Underground Railroad” during an address in Hope.

Indiana Department of Historic Preservation and Archeology Historian Jeannie Regan-Dinius will speak at 6 p.m. today in the Hope Branch of the Bartholomew County Library, 636 Harrison St.

Established in Indiana in 1826, the Underground Railroad was a network of secret routes and safe houses used by slaves to escape into free states and Canada with the aid of abolitionists and allies.
