Swimmers compete in Age Group State Championships

Twelve Club Olympia and three Donner Swim Club swimmers competed in the 2019 Indiana Age Group State Championship meet last weekend at the Indiana University Natatorium on the campus of IUPUI in Indianapolis.

Swimmers from 93 teams competed, with 74 scoring points. Club Olympia finished 22nd with 207 points.

Brady Beyer and Nalanie Cortez contributed 179 of those points for Club Olympia, with Beyer scoring 89 in the Boys 13-14 age group to place fifth in the high-point scoring and Cortez scoring 90 points in the Girls 13-14 age group to place seventh in the high-point scoring.

Beyer was a state champion in the 200-yard breaststroke in a time that currently ranks him 28th in the country for 14-year-olds. He also placed second in the 100 breaststroke and 400 individual medley, third in the 200 IM, fifth in the 1,000 freestyle and 12th in the 500 freestyle.

Beyer also combined with Pratt Badve, Cole Ehara and Arjun Bhadoria to place 24th in the Boys 13-14 200 medley relay.

Cortez also was a state champion, winning the 200 butterfly in a time that ranks her 24th in the nation for 13-year-olds. She also was third in the 1,000 freestyle, fourth in the 100 freestyle and 200 freestyle, sixth in the 500 freestyle and eighth in the 50 freestyle.

Maggie Johnson dropped 7 seconds and scored seven points by placing 10th in the 200 butterfly. She was also 36th in the 100 butterfly.

Misha Machavariani, recognized prior to the finals on the second day for being the top performing 10-year-old boy in the state the previous year, scored in all but one of his six Boys 11-12 events to earn 21 points. He placed 10th in the 50 breaststroke and 100 breaststroke, 14th in the 100 butterfly, 15th in the 50 butterfly and 200 IM and 17th in the 500 freestyle.

Connelly Furnish, swimming in her first individual event at ftate, finished 25th in the Girls 10-and-under 50 breaststroke. She also swam on the 200 medley relay with Brooklyn Pendleton, Zoie Chandelkar and Grier Lane to take 23rd.

Meanwhile, all three Donner swimmers were in the 13-14 age group.

David Fry made the podium by placing 8 th in the 200 breaststroke. He also finished 19th in the 100 breaststroke, 28th in the 50 freestyle, 30th in the 200 IM and 32nd in the 100 butterfly.

For the Donner girls, Karissa Miller took 28th, and Ellie Proffitt was 36th in the 100 freestyle.

Last week, the summary of Club Olympia results at the 2019 SE Indiana Divisional Championships failed to mention two relays that made the podium and received medals for top-eight finishes. Evan Patterson, Nick Green, Ayush Panda and Ethan Myers finished in fourth in the Boys 15-18 200 freestyle Relay and fifth in the 200 medley relay.

Monsters stay unbeaten

Monsters of Rock ran its record to 10-0-1 with an 8-1 win against Toyota Tsunamis. Ben Andrews, Greg Thomas and Ben Eckhart all netted two goals for Monsters, and Zack Henderson and Jordan Garber each added one. Greg McNealy scored for Tsunamis (1-7-3).

The Rockpile (9-1-1) remained a game back with a 3-0 forfeit win against Yoopers (1-10).

Our Name is Earl posted a 7-1 win against Slappin’ Balls. Ricky Hooten scored three goals for Earl (7-3-1), while Ryan Ingalls added two and Richard Gonzalez and Tom Kareus each had one. Darien Castetter scored for Slappin’ Balls (1-8-2).

CCA Kutters (6-4-1) beat Hansons behind three goals from Scott Herron and one from Thom Hayes. Matt Psota had the goal for Hansons (4-6-1).
