Flat Rock-Hawcreek schools prepare for makeover

HOPE — Hope Elementary School and Hauser Jr.-Sr. High School will undergo a makeover this summer with 30 gallons of donated paint.

The Flat Rock-Hawcreek School Corp. was awarded a paint grant through Major’s True Value’s partnership with True Value Foundation’s Painting a Brighter Future program. The grant helps improve schools’ learning environments, which can affect students’ attitudes and academic performance.

Flat Rock-Hawcreek Superintendent Shawn Price said Spencer Gross, owner of Major’s True Value, nominated the corporation for the grant to help refresh its learning spaces. He said it means a lot to see the outreach from the community to help local students.

“They’re always looking out for us,” Price said.

Gross said he wanted to give back to the community and to the school corporation that Major’s True Value loves to serve.

“The donation will not only save the school money, but more importantly will create an environment that fosters learning, inspires creativity and instills community pride,” Gross said.

Exact plans for where the paint will be used are still being determined, but several classrooms at both Hope Elementary and Hauser will receive new coats of paint and touch-ups.

Price said colors will vary from light and dark gray to blue paint for accent walls. The paint is asthma- and allergy-friendly.

Hope Elementary and Hauser are two of more than 1,600 school across the county that have been awarded paint since the program started in 2009.
