Locals named honorable mention All-State in hoops

Three boys and three girls from Columbus are honorable mention selections on this year’s Associated Press All-State basketball teams.

Columbus East senior Matt Frost and Columbus North junior Nick Schiavello and sophomore Blake Barker are honorable mention boys selections.

Frost led the Olympians with 14.2 points and 6.2 rebounds and added 1.9 assists and 1.2 steals a game this season. Barker led the Bull Dogs with 17.0 points and 1.9 steals and added 3.7 rebounds and 2.2 assists a game; while Schiavello added 15.3 points, 3.9 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.0 steals a game.

East freshman Koryn Greiwe and North senior Nadia Lomax and sophomore Alexa McKinley, are honorable mention girls picks, along with Trinity Lutheran sophomore Sydney Jaynes.

Greiwe led the Olympians with 19.0 points, 3.5 assists and 2.5 steals and added 3.3 rebounds a game. McKinley led the Bull Dogs with 10.9 points, 3.6 assists and 2.0 steals and added 3.7 rebounds a game; while Lomax added 9.6 points, 4.1 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.2 steals a game. Jaynes led the Cougars with 14.2 points, 3.2 assists, 1.6 steals and 3.9 blocks and added 7.5 rebounds a game.

Olympian seniors to sign

Three Columbus East seniors will participate in a signing ceremony at 3:30 p.m. today in the school’s commons.

Wide receiver Cody Horner, linebacker Nash Murphy and offensive lineman Jacob Sitterding plan to sign to play football at Hanover College. The trio helped the Olympians to a Class 5A state championship in 2017 and a regional title last fall.

North to host East in track

The crosstown boys and girls track meets will take place today when Columbus East visits Columbus North.

Action is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.

East game time moved

Columbus East announced on Tuesday that it had found a Week 3 football opponent in Ohio power Pickerington Central. That game is scheduled for Sept. 6 at East.

On Wednesday, the Olympians found out that Pickerington Central, which is located in suburban Columbus, Ohio, was granted permission to leave school early on that day, so the game time has been moved up from 8 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Sophomore throws 2-hitter

Columbus North sophomore Gage Bayne took a no-hitter into the seventh inning Saturday in the Bull Dogs’ C-team to a 7-1 win against Bloomington South in the second game of a doubleheader.

Bayne finished with a two-hitter and 14 strikeouts. He did not allow an earned run.

East boys soccer callout set

The Columbus East boys soccer program will have a callout meeting for any current eighth-to-11th-grade students who are interested in playing soccer this fall at 7 p.m. April 29 in Room 110 (Large Group Lecture Hall) of East High School.

East sets football callout

The 2019 Columbus East football callout meeting will be at 6 p.m. May 7 in the school’s cafeteria.

Incoming freshmen through seniors who are interested in playing football at East in the fall and their parents are encouraged to attend.

Wrestlers host ‘Mulch Madness’

The Columbus East Wrestling Club is hosting its Eighth Annual Mulch Madness, with help from Hackman’s Farm Market and Greenhouse.

Individuals or businesses can order mulch by going to columbuseastathletics.com, then clicking on Winter, Wrestling, Varsity and Mulch Madness, or by texting “Mulch” to 812-343-1882 to receive a text back.
