Bacon takes Bloomington Speedway season opener

Brady Bacon captured the Midwest opener for the USAC National Sprint Car Series on April 12 at Bloomington Speedway. A huge crowd was on hand to fill the newly installed grandstands as Bacon took the 30-lap victory.

Kevin Thomas Jr was second, with Jason McDougal, Tyler Courtney and C.J. Leary completing the top-five drivers. The rest of the top 10 finishers were Justin Grant, Chad Boespflug, Chase Stockon, Chris Windom and Robert Ballou.

Chad Combs won the modified feature, and Ethan Barrow grabbed the 305 Racesaver sprint feature.

The next scheduled event at Bloomington will be the Bob Kinser Memorial on May 3.

Ballou takes Lawrenceburg cash

Robert Ballou of Rocklin, California, won the sprint car feature race on April 13 at Lawrenceburg Speedway. C.J. Leary of Greenfield finished in second with Garrett Abrams of Rushville, Chad Boespflug of Lebanon and Columbus native J.J. Hughes.

Brad Wieck of Cincinnati took top honors in the open wheel modified feature at Lawrenceburg. Bobby Davis of Columbus made his first modified start since 2008 and came home in second after starting in seventh. Tim Cornett was third, with Mike Marischen of Cincinnati finishing fourth and Mike Weber of Cincinnati rounding out the top five.

Tonight, Lawrenceburg will host the USAC National Sprint Car Series event. The race was originally scheduled for March 30, but moved to tonight due to rain. Also competing will be modified and hornets. For more info, visit lawrenceburgspeedway.com.

Winners in Columbus go-kart action

The Columbus Speedway Go-Kart Racing was in action on April 13 with a field of 77 karts entered for the night’s activities at the Bartholomew County 4-H Fairgrounds.

The winners in the respective divisions were Jentry Cash of Brownstown (rookies), Colton Lucas of Columbus (flathead 350), Billy Dalton (vintage), Johnny Smith (clone 380), Trent Roe (Jjr1), Ryan Roell (jr2), Shawn Gilpin of Columbus (Yamaha), Travis Wilburn of Milan (clone 425 and clone 400), Jarrod Comb (predator 212), Dakota Moore (jr3), Gary Cunningham of Greensburg (rwyb) and Corey Vanover of Memphis (clone 340).

Columbus Go-Kart Racing will be idle tonight. The next scheduled event is slated for April 27.

Robinson wins at Brownstown

Kent Robinson of Bloomington the MARS-sanctioned super late model feature on April 13 at Brownstown Speedway. Devin Gilpin of Columbus finished in second, followed by Dean Carpenter of Coldwater, Mississippi, Steve Casebolt of Richmond and Greg Johnson of Bedford.

Rounding out the top 10 in the $5,000-to-win super late model feature were Chad Stapleton, Tanner English, Scott James, Frank Heckenast Jr. and Brad Barrow.

Another Bloomington driver, Shelby Miles, won the pro late model feature race over Steve Peeden of Paragon, Justin Shaw of Whiteland, Raymond Humphrey of Bloomington and Zack Burton of Edinburgh.

Rounding out the top 10 in the pro late model feature were Britan Godsey, Brad Barrow, Trent Low, Edgar Godsey and Barry Gerkin.

Jamey Wilson of Seymour won his first super stock feature of the year, winning over Josh Divine of Loogootee, Steve Hollars of Bloomington, Tim Schumpe of Vallonia and Matt Boknecht of Seymour.

Completing the top 10 in the super stock feature were Brad Frye, Matt Terry, Webb Lee, Zach Sasser and Trey Chastain.

Brayden Watson of Bloomington won his first career open wheel modified feature, taking the main event over Jordan Wever of Bloomington, Victor Lee of Danville, Kentucky, Hunt Gossum and Matt Boknecht.

Completing the top 10 in the modified feature were Tim Rivers, Cole Falloway, Blaze Melton, Lucas Wehmiller and Michael Wesselman.

Rick Gumm of Tampico continued his mastery in the pure stock division, winning his 14th consecutive feature race in the class. Zachary Stalker of Salem was second, followed by Michael Cranmer of Jeffersonville, David Palmer of Clarksville and Jeremy Huebner of Loogootee.

Twin Cities results

Joey Kramer of Hanover won his third straight crate late model feature on April 13 at the Twin Cities Raceway Park in Vernon. Tory Collins of North Vernon finished in second. Bill Sheets of Milan, Bill Wagner of Brookville and Keegan Cox of Franklin completed the top five.

Completing the top 10 in the crate late model class were Marty O’Neal, Dylan Norman, Mark Barber, Adam Bowman and Michael Daugherty.

Jeremy Helton of Paris Crossing won the super stock main event. Ross Smith of Columbus, the division’s current points leader, was second, followed by Austin Perry of North Vernon, Danny Hupp of Scipio and Lindsay Wade of Nashville.

Completing the top 10 in the super stock feature were Tony Arthur, Jamie Laufer, Sam Arthur, Austin Burton and Doug McCullough.

Andy Anderson of North Vernon took his second hornet division feature of 2019. Jamie Laufer of Madison placed second followed by Donnie Modesty of Seymour, Warren Laufer of Madison and Tony Lucas of Seymour.

Troy Clark of North Vernon continued to dominate the pure stock class. Mickey Hines of Scipio crossed the line in second, followed by Ralph Lane of Greensburg, Bryson Clark of North Vernon and Keaton Streeval of Edinburgh.

Completing the top 10 in the pure stock main were Mark Hines, Josh Turner, Dusten Carr, Charles Newby and Brent McMillan.

Robbie Roland of Carthage won the first UMRA King of the TQ Midgets feature of the year. Ron Combs of Greensburg placed second, followed by Johnny Goff of Fortville, defending series champion Matthew Hedrick of Rushville and Ashlea Albertson of Indianapolis.

This week in racing history

From 40 years ago in 1979 at Brownstown Speedway, the opening race of the season for late models went to Terry Messenger over Dan Claycomb, Terrence Johnson, Dusty Chapman and C.J. Rayburn. Russ Petro was victorious in the hobby stock feature over Theron Straley, Chuck Gilpin, Ron Hoover and Willie Sallee.

From 30 years ago in 1989 at Brownstown, Steve Barnett won the late model feature over Mike Jewell, Paul Shafer, Jim Curry and C.J. Rayburn. Mark Barber grabbed the street stock feature over Steve Kimberlin, Tom Seadler, Scott Patman and Dan Sturgeon.

From 20 years ago in 1999, Randy Petro won the modified feature at Brownstown, taking the victory over Adam Sasser, Scott Patman, Lee Hobbs and Brad Cummings. Hobbs won the street stock main over Tim Clark, Gregg O’Neill, Steve Hunt and Jerry Adams. Darrell Dearing crossed the line first in the bomber feature, winning over Charlie Stevens Jr., Robbie Wilson, Sam Chastain and Jeff Helton.
