Meningitis B vaccine available from health department

The Bartholomew County Health Department is encouraging area residents to make sure teens and young adults are immunized against Meningitis B.

Although cases are rare, the health department has acquired the vaccine, said nursing division supervisor Amanda Organist.

Meningitis B can be spread through sharing of food or drink, kissing or living in close quarters, Organist said.

It also been known to be passed on through using the same lipstick, lip balm, or drinking from the same water bottle, she said.

In terms of the vaccine’s cost, Organist said most health insurance policies will cover the full cost. And for those who do not have coverage, the vaccine will be administered free, she said.

Those who wish to receive the Meningitis B vaccination are urged to call the health department’s nursing division to schedule an appointment. For information or an appointment, call 812-379-1555, option 1.
