Sheriff’s department warns of phone scam

COLUMBUS, Ind. — The Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department is alerting residents about a telephone scam that uses the names of sheriff’s deputies and department leadership.

The phone calls include threats of tracking the victims’ cellphones and false accusations of criminal charges if the victim does not comply, the sheriff’s department said.

Residents are advised to not give any personal information to the caller, hang up and call local law enforcement.
