United Way seeks volunteers for Day of Caring

The United Way of Bartholomew County is still looking for more than 100 volunteers for its annual Day of Caring event next month.

The Day of Caring, which will be May 10, is an annual full-day volunteer event where local businesses and community members are connected with local non-profit and residential volunteer projects in Bartholomew County.

“We’ve got a lot of different opportunities with the local non-profits, anything from painting inside to stuffing envelopes, different administrative tasks, sorting donations,” said Kyle Hendricks, United Way spokesman. “The projects we’re looking for now are more outdoor-related, like weeding and mulching.”

Additional volunteer activities include planting flowers, painting, organizing and sorting donations and making small home repairs.

Joy King, director of the United Way Volunteer Action Center, said there will be an estimated 55 projects available for people to help out with at this year’s event.

One project will allow volunteers to help Life Design, a local non-profit that provides an array of services for disabled people, with some landscaping tasks for some of the homes the organization manages, King said. Similarly, another project will help Thrive Alliance, a non-profit that focuses on safe and affordable housing, do some outdoor work on some of the houses it oversees.

Another project will offer volunteers the chance to help Just Friends, an adult day care program, with an assortment of client activities.

Hendricks said the event is a win-win for local not-for-profit organizations and volunteers.

“There’s an opportunity for social connection, giving back, networking with people in your work group or organization or just out in the community,” Hendricks said.

Last year, 687 volunteers worked on approximately 55 projects during the event for a combined total 2,748 volunteer hours, King said.
