Bike month begins today in Columbus

Healthy Communities is proclaiming May as Bike Month in Columbus, and providing a number of activities to help local residents enjoy bike riding.

Free ColumBike rides will be available from today through July 31, courtesy of a gift from SIHO Insurance Services. Local residents may check out one of the bike-share program bicycles at a ColumBike kiosk using a credit card and promo code 417 and you may ride for two hours for free. The month will have a kickoff with Handlebar Happy Hour from 6 to 8 p.m. May 9 at Upland Columbus Pumphouse in downtown Columbus. Free appetizers and a cash bar are planned, with an opportunity to socialize and learn more about ColumBike.

The annual Bike to Work Day has merged with Cummins Bike to Work Day on May 17. Cummins leadership will ride from the west side of town and other community leaders will lead rides from various locations at 7:15 a.m.

Locations to meet up for Bike to Work Day are:

West side: Meet in the Papa’s Grill parking lot

Blackwell Park/Parkside Area: Meet in the parking lot west of the soccer fields

The Haw Creek Trail: Meet at the intersection of 30th Street and Griffa

America and Roby Anderson Community Center, 421 McClure Road

A light breakfast will be provided by the city of Columbus to bicyclists from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. at the Cummins Irwin Conference Center Plaza, on Fifth Street between Jackson and Washington streets.

This year’s Bike to School Day is Wednesday, May 8, with details being distributed at local schools.

The Positivity Path Lunch and Ride is at noon May 22 followed by a picnic lunch. The Positivity Path 2.0 is a walking/biking loop around Clifty Park, featuring signs with positive messages to support mental health and substance misuse recovery.

The Bartholomew County Library will have a Bicycle Fun Storytime in two sessions, for ages 3 to 8 at 4 p.m. May 31 and ages 8 to 12 at 5 p.m. May 31. Two kids-size bikes will be given away, courtesy of Children’s Inc. Visit mybcpl.org for details.
