Over the last decade, Republican candidates have dominated local city and county politics.

With the exception of Democrats Tom Dell and Elaine Wagner winning city council seats in 2015, all other city and county offices are currently occupied by Republicans.

But the Bartholomew County Democratic Party seems to have one advantage over the GOP as the 2019 city primary approaches: money.

As of April 12, the Democrats have raised $35,229, which includes over $20,000 they had in reserve at the start of this year.

In contrast, the Bartholomew County Republican Central Committee reported they had raised $19,367 by mid-April.  They started off the year with $7,742, according to finance reports.

However, the local GOP has spent more money on this primary than the Democrats. The Republicans have spent $13,404 so far this year, compared to $10,903 by the Democrats, the reports state.

Although the Republicans will have four contested races on the May primary, there are no contested races for Democrats.
