East boys, girls sweep Brown County

NASHVILLE — Columbus East’s girls and boys track teams look to be setting themselves up in good position for the month of May with conference and sectional coming up following Tuesday’s dual meet at Brown County.

The Olympian girls claimed a 104-27 victory and the East boys captured a 91-41 win.

“We did really well. We competed and won quite a few events,” East boys coach Scott Pherson said. “It was a good time, and Brown County is such a great facility to have a track meet.”

Winners for the Olympian boys include Crase Bergman in the long jump (21 feet, 0 inches) and 200 meters (23.0 seconds), Zander Gentry in the high jump (5-6), Cody Horner in the 100 (11.03), Seth Chandler in the 400 (52.9), Nick Walter in the 3200 (10:52.4), the 4×800 relay team of Garrett McGaha, Cody Keifer, Walter and Isaac VanCuren in (8:33.7), the 4×100 relay team of Owen Rupp, Tyler Settle, Elliott Koopman and Horner in 45.0 and the 4×400 relay team of Rupp, Chandler, Malachi Parks and Bergman in 3:34.9.

Dale Phelps led the Eagle boys with wins in the 100 hurdles (16.15) and 300 hurdles (41.5) Other winners were Evan Fleischman in the pole vault (10-6), Layton Mosier in the shot put (44-2 1/2) and the discus (122-8), Marino Dolph in the 1600 (4:46.95) and Jackson McPheeters in the 800 (2:07).

“Dale Phelps in both hurdle races did very well for us, and that was really impressive,” Brown County boys coach Kirk Wrightsman said. “Evan Fleischman had an improvement in the vault by about three-to-six inches. I blame myself for this, but I don’t think that we were ready for the heat. We had some kids that didn’t adjust very well to that, but I think we’ll be OK. Layton Mosier, too, had some improvements in the shot and the discus.”

Emily Stiles won the 100 hurdles (16.47) and 300 hurdles (51.1), and Sydney Wilson took the 100 (12.9) and 200 (26.9) to lead the East girls. Other winners were Elena Stoughton in the high jump (5-0), Gabi Schuetz in the long jump (14-8 1/2), Kelly Fields in the shot (33-11), Beyoncey Coleman-Turner in the discus (135-9), Olivia Linnemann in the 1,600 (5:49), Yami Diaz in the 400 (1:04.4) and Maddy Ping in the 800 (2:41), Amanda Pottorff in the 3,200 (13:50), the 4×800 relay team of Linnemann, Diaz, Olivia Shoaf and Ping in 12:36 and the 4×100 relay team of Williams, Katie Hagan, Schuetz and Wilson in 52.7.

“We ran a lot of the girls in things that we thought they might run in (Tuesday’s Hoosier Hills) conference meet and see how they would do,” East girls coach Glen Brown said. “I haven’t seen a lot of time from the southern schools (Floyd Central, New Albany and Jeffersonville), but we are going to attack just like how we’re going to attack all of our meets. We’ll go in, and we’ll do the very best that we can, and if things fall in the right places, we’ll win.”

Winners for the Brown County girls include Izzy Rygiel in the pole vault (8-6) and the 4×400 relay team of Coralynn Robinson, Anna Fleetwood, Rygiel and Christy Sebastian in 4:28.

“We had some pretty good splits in the 4×400 race, which was really impressive and a good exclamation point to the meet,” Brown County girls coach Jay Myers said. “It was impressive to see the girls go out and compete the way that they did. Other than that, the girls did pretty well overall.”

One of the memorable moments of the night came in one of the heats in the 400 where the Eagles Unified athletes competed with the Olympian runners.

“To me, it was the coolest thing of the night, and I was excited for it,” Pherson said. “It was great for our kids to do something special that will bring memories to those kids.”
