Day of Caring great opportunity to help

Sometimes, individuals and organizations in a community could use a helping hand. Various circumstances can make completing a needed project difficult or impossible without a little assistance.

One mark of a caring community is how well its residents respond to such needs.

A week from today, on May 10, local residents will have an opportunity to do just that, to lend a hand by participating in the United Way of Bartholomew County’s annual Day of Caring.

The full-day event utilizes volunteers (individuals, businesses and groups) who are connected through United Way with local nonprofits and residents to assist them on projects in the county.

Last year, 687 volunteers worked on about 55 projects — for 2,748 total volunteer hours. That’s a lot of help for individuals and nonprofits who otherwise would struggle to get the projects done because of financial and manpower limitations, and other obstacles.

Those who participate are a huge help to the community, providing a needed lift to residents and organizations.

Volunteering demonstrates a level of care for one’s community that’s welcome and appreciated. The Day of Caring is something in which all local residents should consider participating.

The good thing is it’s easy to volunteer. Just register online at uwbarthco.org or send an email to [email protected].

The time spent volunteering produce a benefit many times greater than the hours invested.
