Democratic presidential hopeful plans town hall in Columbus

A Democratic presidential candidate with ties to Columbus is planning a town hall meeting here.

U.S. Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-California), who recently announced he is running for president, will hold a town hall meeting on Sunday in Columbus.

The event will be held at 2 p.m. at Factory 12 Event Loft at 1235 Jackson St. Swalwell, 38, is married to Columbus native Brittany Watts Swalwell.

“Our campaign all about the issues most important to America’s hometowns,” Swalwell said in a statement. “I’ve recently spoken in my hometowns of Algona, Iowa, and Dublin, California, and we’ll bring our message — extending the promise of America to all Americans — to Brittany’s hometown of Columbus as well.”

On April 8, Swalwell announced that he was running for president during an appearance on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” joining a crowded Democratic presidential field with at least 21 candidates who have officially launched campaigns.

Swalwell is a four-term U.S. representative who serves on the House Intelligence and Judiciary committees and co-chairs the Democratic Steering and Policy Committee.

“We’re delighted to welcome Congressman Swalwell back to Columbus, and to welcome Brittany home,” said Bob Hyatt, chair of the Bartholomew County Democratic Party, which is co-sponsoring the town hall. “This is a great opportunity for all residents of Columbus to hear first-hand from a presidential candidate and share ideas on how best to move our country forward.”
