Letter: Changing gloves needed for health reasons

On May 7, an employee of a local grocery store had an Onion publish in The Republic that read, to "the store customer who made it her business to tell me about changing my plastic gloves.

The plastic gloves aren’t intended to just protect one’s hands. They are intended to protect the customers’ food from the germs the employee’s hands have touched prior to handling our food. If one works at a grocery store, often times employees in the deli go through doors into the back room, and who knows what is being touched in the back room. Someone may have sneezed on the doors the employee just touched. When the employee returns, he or she may have touched a number of other things where germs are lurking. Hopefully one can fill in the blanks.

If employees aren’t conscientious enough to change their gloves, a wise customer should definitely remind them. They are the ones paying for and consuming the meat or cheese, which doesn’t need to be cooked prior to eating. Often times, the items may be for an elderly person with a compromised immune system who doesn’t need to be picking up germs from food being handled with dirty gloves.
