Great achievement

Six local seniors have been accepted into one of the U.S. military academies to continue their education after high school. That’s a remarkable number for one community for one year, considering that the academies are selective in who they accept because of the academic, leadership and physical fitness requirements.

Columbus North High School’s Noah Algee and Caroline Swanson will attend the United States Military Academy. North’s Sam Russell will attend the U.S. Naval Academy. North’s Emma Smith and Sam Horak, and Columbus East’s Garrett McGaha will attend the U.S. Air Force Academy.

It’s an accomplishment to be selected, and seeking this path speaks well about their desire to serve their country.

Nice honor

Hauser agriculture teacher Aleesa Dickerson was recently named the Indiana Association of Agricultural Educators Outstanding Early Career Educator of the Year. The honor is given to an ag educator who has served fewer than eight years.

It appears she’s packed in a lot in a short time for her students. Dickerson has had students learn through hands-on experiences such as raising chicks, raising pigs, fish farms and nurturing plants. She also leads the Hope FFA chapter, and has had several members win state contests.

The award is well-deserved for a teacher who is making a significant impact with students.

Good opportunity

Getting rid of unwanted items and helping the environment at the same time can be a challenge sometimes. Fortunately, local residents have a good opportunity for doing that coming soon.

Cummins Inc.’s annual Community-Wide Recycle Day is 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 13 at the entrance of Columbus Engine Plant, 500 Central Ave.

A wide range of hard-to-dispose-of items will be accepted, including tires, electronic waste and appliances. This year, for the first time, durable medical devices also will be accepted, such as wheelchairs, walkers and knee scooters.

This is a great opportunity for local residents to get rid of unwanted items and help the environment and their community.
