East, North seniors picked for All-Star Baseball Classic

Two local seniors have been selected to this year’s North-South All-Star Baseball Classic.

Columbus East outfielder Julian Greenwell and Columbus North pitcher Parker Maddox will play for the South team against the North next weekend at Madison High School. The teams will play a doubleheader June 22 and a single game June 23.

Greenwell leads the Olympians with a .421 batting average and nine doubles. He also has four home runs, 21 RBIs and 29 runs scored for East, which will play in the Class 4A state title game Monday night against Hamilton Southeastern.

Maddox went 6-1 with one save and a 1.37 ERA for the Bull Dogs this season. He struck out 51 and walked 19 in 41 innings pitched.

Greenwell, Maddox and North senior Jakob Meyer were named to the All-District team. Meyer is an alternate for the North-South Classic.

Track athletes compete

Jennings County senior Kayla Truesdell finished eighth in the discus in Saturday’s Midwest Meet of Champions in East Lansing, Michigan.

Truesdell, who had placed second in the state finals a week earlier, threw 133 feet, 7 inches for Team Indiana on Saturday. The meet featured top seniors from Indiana, Ohio and Michigan.

Meanwhile, two Columbus North freshmen who competed in the 1,600 meters in the state meet will run in the New Balance Outdoor Nationals in Greensboro, North Carolina. Matt Newell and Reese Kilbarger-Stumpff will be in the Freshman Mile at 5:05 p.m. Friday.

State baseball tickets on sale

Baseball State Finals tickets will be on sale at Columbus East High School today and Friday.

East will be selling tickets from 9:30 a.m. to noon, 1 to 2:30 p.m. and 5 to 6 p.m. today and from 9:30 to 11:45 a.m. Friday.

Tickets are $10 each. Cash or checks made out to “CEHS” will be accepted, although East is asking for exact change if paying by cash.

The Olympians play Hamilton Southeastern in the Class 4A final at around 8:30 p.m. Monday at Victory Field in Indianapolis.

Freshman named tennis MVP

Freshman Ashlie Wilson, who led Columbus North to the state tournament, has been selected the Bull Dogs MVP.

Senior Shweta Srinivasan won the Bull Dog Award, and freshman Tiffany Fu won the Sportsmanship/Mental Attitude Award. Senior Servane Cloteaux and juniors Ali Bergman and Cassidy May were named Most Improved.

Cloteaux and junior Paige Bishop also were recoginzed for sportsmanship at the varsity level; while junior Ally Parker, sophomore Shivali Singireddy and freshman Anuskha Nair were recognized for sportsmanship at the JV level. Sophomore Saanvikha Saravanan and freshmen Kenzie Acton and Singireddy were named Most Improved JV players.

Wilson, Fu, May, Srinivasan, sophomore Lauren Hartwell and freshman Sydney Cooper won Bull Dog Pride awards. Fu, Bishop, Parker, junior Erica Song and freshmen Leah George and Shenyi Gong won Bull Dog Support awards.

Chevalier and Bishop were honored as team captains.

Pair selected softball MVPs

Senior Bailey Lofton and junior Sierra Norman, who led Columbus North to a sectional title, have been named co-MVPs for the Bull Dogs.

Freshman Rachel Cowan won the Bull Dog Award, sophomore Meghan Waggoner won the Most Improved Award and freshman Peri Foust won the Coach’s Award. Seniors Lofton, Jenna Fath and Brooke Rice were recognized as captains.

Junior named baseball MVP

Junior Grant Trinkle has been selected MVP of the Columbus North baseball team that won the Conference Indiana title.

Trinkle also was named Most Valuable Offensive Player, seniors Maddox and Meyer shared the Most Valuable Pitcher award and junior Adam Chapman was named Most Valuable Defensive Player. Senior Konner Stahl won the Bull Dog Award, and sophomore Austin Bode won the Big Stick, Black & Blue and Quality At-Bat awards.

Stahl and Trinkle were recognized as team captains. Freshman Will Baker won the JV Bull Dog Award, and sophomore Gage Bayne won the C-team Bull Dog Award.

North boys hosting hoops camps

The Columbus North boys basketball team will host two more camps in June.

The Middle School Camp is from 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Thursday for Grades 6 to 8. The Shooting Camp is from 9 a.m. to noon June 17 to 20 for Grades 3 to 8.

Cost is $100 for each camp. Signup forms are available on the Columbus North athletics website — columbusnorthathletics.org/ — under “Summer Camps.”

East to host girls hoops camp

The 2019 Columbus Lady Olympians Summer Basketball Camp will be Monday through Wednesday for girls entering Grades 3 to 8. Grades 3 to 5 will be from 1 to 2:30 p.m., and Grades 6 to 8 will be from 2:30 to 4 p.m.

Columbus East head coach and Indiana Basketball Hall of Famer Danny Brown will conduct the camp, which will stress fundamentals and team play. Olympian players will demonstrate drills.

North hosting softball camp

Columbus North will host the CNHS Summer Softball Camp from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday for Grades 3 to 5 and from 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday for Grades 6 to 8 at the high school fields at Southside Elementary.

Cost is $40 for Grades 3 to 5 and $45 for Grades 6 to 8. High school coaches and players will direct camp drills and activities for all skill levels from beginner to advanced.

Columbus East volleyball coach Stacie Pagnard and her staff and players will host the Columbus East Youth Volleyball Camp from 4:30 to 6 p.m. July 8 to 11 at the school for Grades K through 8.
