Columbus East High School baseball players will sport Olympian Orange hair when they take on Hamilton Southeastern in the Class 4A final Monday at Victory Field in Indianapolis.

Nineteen members of the team had their hair dyed during a team-building session Wednesday at licensed beautician Lynley Roberts’ home.

Roberts donated her time to provide orange highlights to the team’s hair. Some players only dyed the tips of their hair orange and others went for the full orange treatment.

Missy Borkhardt, the mother of player Julian Greenwell, said several of the boys were shocked to see the finished look after patiently waiting for the dye to set, some even sitting under hair dryers for the process.

She took several before-and-after photos for the players could compare the looks.

Harry Major got a complete transformation, going from brown hair to blonde for a $50 bet with some of his teammates. Other players also had their hair trimmed with designs.

Borkhardt said the dye will remain in the player’s hair until they get a haircut, which means a full buzz cut for some who decided a full-on orange hair color was the only way to go for Monday’s championship game.

Using hair dye to express team spirit isn’t new for the Olympians, whose football, basketball and now baseball players have gone with orange hair or orange hair tips at various championship games.

Their fans have been known to sport orange body paint and wigs while cheering from the stands.

The Olympians go to bat in the state tournament at around 8:30 p.m. Monday at Victory Field in Indianapolis.
