Bartholomew County Health Department administrator retires

Collis Mayfield

Bartholomew County Health Department Administrator Collis Mayfield has retired from his leadership role at the health department, according to county health officials.

“He retired with no fanfare,” said Linc Fulp, director of environmental services at the Bartholomew County Health Department.

Mayfield, a longtime staple at the Bartholomew County Health Department, first joined the department in 1973, serving as director of environmental health.

He did not respond to an interview request about his decision to retire.

No replacement for Mayfield has been named, and the health department is currently reorganizing staff to ensure that all job duties are being covered, Fulp said.

Recently, Mayfield led efforts to investigate several hepatitis A reports from two local restaurants and helped plan several immunization clinics in an effort to stem the outbreak.

He also led the local health department effort encouraging more local families to consider having their children tested for exposure to lead.

In 1979, Mayfield took a job in the private sector before returning to the health department in 1984. Mayfield became health department director in 2005.

In 2015, the health department restructured several job titles and changed Mayfield’s job title to administrator, though his job functions and responsibilities remained the same.

Mayfield received a bachelor’s degree from Western Kentucky University in 1973 and master’s degree in environmental science from Indiana University in 1980, according to his social media posts.

He is a member of the 1962 graduating class of Columbus High School (now Columbus North High School).
