JENNINGS COUNTY — A 2-year-old boy suffered serious injuries in an accident involving a riding lawnmower, the Jennings County Sheriff’s Department said.

At about 1 p.m. Saturday, a grandfather and grandmother arrived at the Jennings County Sheriff’s Office/Jennings County EMS, which are both located in the same building), and requested an ambulance for their grandson, said Chief Deputy Sheriff Dave Turner.

According to statements given by the grandparents, the grandfather was mowing the yard on a riding lawn mower at a residence on County Road 150S (Grayford Road) in Jennings County. The toddler ran toward his grandfather, who was backing up the riding mower, and the grandmother gave chase to try and get the toddler to stop. The toddler fell and went under the mower, Turner said.

The grandparents met with Jennings County EMS and the toddler was transported to St. Vincent Jennings Hospital for initial treatment. The toddler was later flown from St. Vincent Jennings Hospital to Riley Hospital with serious injuries, Turner said.

Deputies are continuing the investigation.
