Animal Care Services seeks riders, volunteers for Moonlight Loop ride

Cyclists ride in the 2017 Moonlight Loop.

Cyclists still have time to register to ride in this year’s Moonlight Loop, Columbus Animal Care Services’ annual evening bike ride. The ride raises funds for the city’s animal shelter.

The ride begins at 9 p.m. on Aug. 3 at the Bartholomew County Public Library Plaza, 536 Fifth St. Riders will make a loop around the city of Columbus, passing several architectural gems along the way.

Over the last six years, the event has netted over $58,000 for Animal Care Services.

Registration, a course map and additional information about the event are available at columbus.in.gov/animal-care-services/moonlight-loop.

Participants can save $5 and register for $30 per person through Friday, Aug. 2. On-site registration will be available at the Library Plaza on Aug. 3 for $35 per person beginning at 6:30 p.m.

The Moonlight Loop will travel through several neighborhoods in Columbus. Residents may download the map at columbus.in.gov/animal-care-services/moonlight-loop and are encouraged to turn on their home’s lights and cheer on participants if they live along the route.

Volunteers are still needed for the Aug. 3 event. If interested in volunteering, call 812-376-2505 or email [email protected].

Volunteers will receive a free T-shirt. Volunteers at the SAG/food stop must be 13 years old or older to volunteer with a parent or guardian. On the route, volunteers must be at least 16 years old and accompanied by a parent or guardian.

The Animal Care Services Department is operated by city tax dollars and through fines, fees and monetary donations. However, the general operating budget only covers basic services including wages, utilities and maintenance of both the facility and vehicles.

The adoption and medical fund does not use tax dollars and is supported by fines, fees and monetary donations. Donations made to Columbus Animal Care Services are considered tax-deductible, and all donations will be used solely for public purposes, according to the city.
