Commissioners vote down proposed increased fine for driving around flooding barricades

A proposed ordinance that would have significantly increased the fine for driving around barricades warning motorists of roads closed due to flooding was voted down Monday.

Bartholomew County Commissioners Rick Flohr and Larry Kleinhenz said they did not believe that raising the fine from the state-imposed $140 to $500 would be effective.

In addition, the commissioners said those who receive the fines will likely be the ones who can least afford it.  In addition, the commissioners said the cost of enforcing and prosecuting a local ordinance, which must be entirely paid by county funds, is too high.
