Next week is rivalry week in Columbus

In addition to the Aug. 30 Columbus North at Columbus East football game, the Bull Dogs and Olympians will square off in five other sports next week.

The rivalry week heats up on Tuesday when East visits North in boys tennis at 4:30 p.m. and the boys and girls cross-country teams run at Ceraland at 5:30 p.m.

The two girls soccer teams meet on Wednesday, and the boys soccer teams play on Aug. 29, both at Richard Wigh Soccer Complex. JV games begin at 5:30 p.m., with the varsity to follow at around 7:15 p.m. both nights.

This year’s football game, which is set for 7 p.m. Aug. 30, will be part of the Great American Rivalry Series. The winning team will take home the Great American Rivalry Series Champions trophy, presented by the Marines. The game’s Most Valuable Player will be recognized after the game as part of the Series, and a senior Scholar-Athlete will receive a college scholarship based on academic and athletic performance.

North-East matchups in the other two fall sports will take place in the next few weeks. The girls golf match will be at 4:15 p.m. Sept. 17 at Harrison Lake Country Club, and the volleyball game will be Oct. 3 at East.

North senior picks DePauw

Columbus North senior Brooke Bruin has committed to continue her softball career at DePauw.

Bruin batted .235 with a double, a triple, seven RBIs and nine runs scored this spring. The shortstop-center fielder helped the Bull Dogs win Conference Indiana and sectional titles.

Bruin plans to major in economics and minor in accounting and finance.

North adds soccer game

Columbus North has added a boys soccer game for Saturday night.

The Bull Dogs will host Avon, with the JV game beginning at 6 p.m. and the varsity to follow at around 7:30 p.m. That game will replace Tuesday’s scheduled home game with Cathedral after the Irish dropped that contest.

Also, a couple of the local sporting events that were rained out on Tuesday have been rescheduled. The Shelbyville at Hauser boys tennis match now will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, and the Columbus Christian at Hauser boys soccer match will be at 5 p.m. Aug. 30.
