North blanks Floyd

FLOYDS KNOBS — Jenna Lang scored a pair of goals to lead Class 3A No. 20 Columbus North to a 2-0 win Saturday at Floyd Central.

Lang scored in the fourth minute off an assist from KJ Ely, and the Bull Dogs (3-1) led 1-0 at halftime. Lang’s second goal came in the 53rd minute off an assist from Lauryn Whitley.

Panthers rout Raiders

NORTH VERNON — Baylee Byford netted three goals and two assists Saturday to lead Jennings County to a 7-0 rout of South Ripley.

Morgan Lane had two goals and two assists, and Katie Pappenheim added a goal and assist for the Panthers (2-2). The seventh goal was an own goal by the Raiders.

East edges Cougars

BLOOMINGTON — Bloomington North scored in the fourth minute to take the lead, but 3A No. 13 Columbus rallied for a 2-1 victory on Saturday.

Chris Quisenberry scored off an assist from Jorge Nieto in 10th minute, and the score remained 1-1 until halftime. The Olympians (4-0-1) got the go-ahead goal from Kevin Sanchez in the 54th minute.

East outshot the Cougars 15-9, and both teams put six shots on goal. Zach Roberts recorded five saves.

Jets top Crusaders

Hauser picked up its first win of the season Friday, a 5-1 victory against Columbus Christian.

Franco Avila and Tyler Hollman each scored twice, and Cameron Scott added a goal for the Jets (1-2), while Caetano Fracasso and Carlos Cuevas had assists. C.J. Reed scored the goal for the Crusaders (0-2) off an assist from Sam Flint.

Hauser outshot Columbus Christian 14-10. Avery Hammond recorded 10 saves for the Crusaders, and Caleb Walker and Carter Scott each had two saves for the Jets.

Eagles tie Tiger Cubs

GREENCASTLE — Brown County jumped out to a 3-0 lead after 30 minutes Saturday, but Greencastle rallied to forge a 3-3 Western Indiana Conference tie.

Sam Normile, Ricky Stanley and Will Normile scored the goals for the Eagles (0-3-1, 0-1-1). Caleb Yeager assisted on the first two goals, and Sam Normile had the final assist.

The Tiger Cubs outshot Brown County 23-7. Ethan Scott recorded 20 saves.

North downs Patriots

No. 6 Columbus North remained unbeaten with a 4-1 Conference Indiana win against Terre Haute North on Saturday.

Nathan Lin beat Peter Christ 6-3, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, Bhavey Jain downed Jae-Won Jung 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 singles and Adam Saad topped Max Marietta 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 singles for the Bull Dogs (4-0). Eamon Ma and Atharva Kute beat Ethan Gratless and Cam Harden 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles.

North’s Matthew Liu and Joey Zhao fell to Cade Moore and Ethan Knott 6-0, 7-6 (4) at No. 1 doubles.

Quakers blank East

Plainfield won four matches in straight sets Saturday in handing Columbus East a 5-0 defeat.

Pranav Kumar fell to Brady Sinks 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, Derek Heideman lost to Alex Kessinger 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2 singles and Danny Murphy fell to Ryan Rechner 7-5, 4-6, (10-6) at No. 3 singles for the Olympians (1-4).

East’s Emmit Romine and Matthew Degner lost to Cade East and Cam Chafin 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 doubles. Wyatt Romine and Caleb Wettschurack fell to Avery Bennett and Keaton East 6-0, 6-3 at No. 2 doubles.

Eagles win invitational

NASHVILLE — Brown County claimed its invitational championship on Saturday, winning four of the five positions.

In the title matches, Aaron McCann beat Ethan Isaacs of Brownstown Central 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, Josh Miller downed Anthony Conley of Greencastle 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 singles and Nolan Patterson topped Henry Carter of Greencastle 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3 singles.

Spencer Blee and Noah Cochran won against Anthony Atwood and Decklan Pappano of Southwestern (Shelby) 6-4, 7-5 at No. 1 doubles. Reid Davis and Eli Sichting lost in the consolation match to Brownstown Central’s Trent Luedeman and Cole Shasteen 8-6 at No. 2 doubles.

Columbus Christian wins

INDIANAPOLIS — Columbus Christian had little trouble Friday in rolling to a 25-13, 25-13, 25-8 win at Horizon Christian.

Lauren Hunnicutt led the Crusaders (5-0) with two blocks and seven aces. Ellie Ridder pounded seven kills, and Hannah Stair recorded 12 assists.

Also for Columbus Christian, Hunnicutt added five kills, Stair tallied two kills and six aces and Madison Henderson had two kills and five aces. Emily Stair served two aces, Kayla Jones added one kill and one ace and Ann Marie Gandy and Lily Lunsford each had one kill.

Jets finish fifth

SCOTTSBURG — Class A No. 6 Hauser played two 4A and two 2A schools and went 2-2 to finish fifth in Saturday’s Scottsburg Invitational. The Jets beat Christian Academy of Indiana 25-19, 25-20 and lost to Jasper 25-20, 25-20 and Cloverdale 25-16, 27-25 before beating Pike 25-15, 25-20.

Hannah Johnson recorded six blocks and four aces, and Shelby Fugate had 39 digs and four aces in the four matches to lead Hauser (9-2). Kylie Lock pounded 22 kills, and Aunaka Wasil tallied 68 assists.

Also for the Jets, Johnson notched 21 kills, while Fugate added 14 and Olivia Wright had 10. Melanie Taylor added four assists and 34 digs, Marnie Schwartzkopf had three blocks, Wasil and Wright each contributed two blocks, Andi Clark tallied 27 digs, Lock had 25 digs and two aces and Mary Branum served two aces.

Jennings County went 1-3 to finish eighth. The Panthers fell to Cloverdale 25-22, 25-23 and Evansville North 25-11, 25-19, beat Lousiville Butler 15-25, 25-18, 15-5 nd lost to Christian Academy 25-18, 25-14.

Abi Vogel recorded 21 kills and seven solo and assist blocks, and Megan Vogel had 30 assists and four aces to lead Jennings (5-6). Hanah Bertram tallied 58 digs, and Shelby Wilson served four aces.

Also for Jennings, Liz Ertel added eight kills, 22 assists and three solo and eight assist blocks. Lauren Clayton pounded nine kills, Caitlin Hurley had eight kills and Karma Warren notched 15 digs.

Eagles win own invite

NASHVILLE — Brown County beat Greencastle 19-25, 25-17, 15-12; Edinburgh 25-15, 15-10 and Owen Valley 21-25, 25-15, 15-8 to capture its own invitational on Saturday.

Chloe Lee recorded 23 kills and 18 digs, and Abigail Hollander had 65 assists and 28 digs to lead the Eagles (5-1). Abigail Bowman served nine aces.

Also for Brown County, Mary Rygiel pounded 20 kills, and Lauren Akles added 13 kills. Milly Patrick and Natalie Suding each tallied 15 digs, Hollander served three aces and Lee had six aces.

Edinburgh fell to Greencastle 25-5, 25-16 before its loss to Brown County and ended the day with a 13-25, 25-13, 15-12 defeat against Indian Creek.

Gracie Crawhorn led the Lancers (4-6) with two blocks and nine digs. Emily Chappelow pounded nine kills, Paige Burton recorded 17 assists and Carly Cowan served three aces.

Also for Edinburgh, Crawhorn and Burton each pounded five kills, Chappelow tallied 13 assists and Burton had one block. Cowan Greta Drover and Gracie Myers all notched three digs, and Crawhorn and Greta Drover each served one ace.

Cougars drop four

COWAN — South Decatur fell to Cambridge City Lincoln 25-13, 16-25, 25-9; Cowan 25-12, 25-22; Indianapolis Tindley 19-25, 25-17, 15-12 and Beech Grove 25-12, 25-14 in Saturday’s Cowan Invitational.

Kalie Fry led the Cougars (1-11) with 33 digs and six aces. Lana Bell pounded 17 kills, Whitnye Burton recorded 30 assists, Brook Somers and Lana Bell each had two blocks and Lana Bell served six aces.

Also for South Decatur, Somers tallied 12 kills and 25 digs. Lauryn Pate had one block, and Lily Rigby notched 27 digs.

Trinity goes 2-2

BROWNSTOWN — Class A No. 3 Trinity Lutheran went 2-2 in Saturday’s Brownstown Central Invitational.

Hannah Sabotin led the Cougars (5-3) with 39 kills and 10 blocks. Bailey Reynolds served five aces.

Also for Trinity, Sydney Jaynes pounded 17 kills, and Bailey Tabeling added 15 kills. Kennedy Hoffman had two aces.

Eagles take third

BRAZIL — Brown County finished third in Saturday’s WIC Tournament with a 381 at Forest Park. Northview won with a 342 and Indian Creek finished second with a 362.

Allison Stogsdill and Taylor Poling made the All-Conference team with rounds of 85 and 89, respectively, to lead the Eagles. Aubrey Hollander added a 98, Avery Patterson shot 109 and Courtney Hill had a 120.

CROSS-country

Eagle girls fourth

The Brown County girls finished fourth with 141 points in Saturday’s Franklin Invitational.

Abby Fleetwood led the Eagles with a third-place finish in 19 minutes, 35 seconds for 5,000 meters (3.1 miles). Hadley Gradolf took 13th in 21:06, while Emelia Koester was 22nd (21:27), Emma DeBord 38th (22:32) and Maris Wyman 80th (24:10).

The Eagle boys finished 15th with 369 points. Chase Austin took 20th in 17:28, while Rafe Silbaugh was 106th (19:27), Cameron Fox 115th (19:37), Waylon Patrick 137th (20:09), Rhett Silbaugh 171st (20:53) and Dylan Taylor 233rd (23:02).

Cougars get first win

GREENSBURG — South Decatur jumped out to a 20-0 halftime lead Saturday and went on to post a 27-8 victory against Tri-County.

Colton Johannigman had five carries for 108 yards, and Clayton McNeely carried 15 times for 81 yards and two touchdowns for the Cougars (1-1). Wyatt Gatewood carried nine times for 90 yards and two touchdowns and completed 4 of 7 passes for 95 yards.

Gatewood, who also plays defense, sat out the third quarter because of dehydration. In his place, Kelby Shook completed 1 of 3 passes for 27 yards.

Hunter Collins caught three passes for 98 yards. Jacobi Shook had 10 tackles, and Brogan Howard and McNeely each added nine tackles

“We pretty much dominated the game,” said Rick Zimmerman, who picked up his first win as South Decatur coach. “We hit some big pass plays, and then when we’d get down tight, we’d just run it in.”

Panthers topple Eagles

NORTH VERNON — Quarterback Lance Bailey ran for two fourth-quarter touchdowns Friday to rally Jennings County to a 42-35 win against Brown County, giving Panther coach Justun Sharp his first win as a head coach.

Bailey also completed 18 of 27 passes for 287 yards and two scores to go along with his 70 rushing yards. That was enough to offset a 28-of-42, 369-yard, four-touchdown performance from the Eagles’ Noah Carter.

Owen Deaton ran 1 yard for a first-quarter score, and Bailey hit Jared Corya for 29 yards and Owen Miller for 18 yards in the second quarter and the Panthers (1-1) led 20-14 at halftime. Owen Miller added a 7-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, and Deaton ran for a 2-point conversion.

Carter threw second-quarter scoring passes of 18 yards to Jordan Oswald and 40 yards to Javan Oliphant. In the third quarer, Carter ran 12 yards for a score and hit Brandon Fleischman for a 32-yard touchdown. Carter threw a 7-yard scoring pass to Kody Walsh early in the fourth quarter, giving Brown County (1-1) a 35-28 lead.

The Panthers’ Levi Peacock caught seven passes for 131 yards, and Corya had nine catches for 116 yards. For the Eagles, Nick Huls had eight catches for 92 yards, and Walsh caught eight passes for 88 yards.
