Domestic dispute leads to shooting death in Shelby County

5:20 p.m. UPDATE: Contains corrected information from the Shelby County Sheriff Department:

FLAT ROCK — The Shelby County Sheriff’s Department said a 24-year-old was shot to death Sunday in a domestic dispute.

Deputies received a 911 call about the domestic incident at 3:32 p.m. Sunday in the west 300 block of County Road 1000S in Flat Rock, said Shelby County Sheriff Louie Koch.

The 911 caller, Ricky Drake, 72, told deputies that Dominick Drake, 24, was out of control and had threatened him with a knife and a large whiskey bottle, Koch said.

Ricky Drake told deputies he felt threatened by Dominick Drake and fired a single shot from a .45-caliber handgun, striking the 24-year-old in the chest, Koch said.

Flat Rock Fire Department and Shelbyville Fire Department responded to the scene, but were unable to find signs of life for Dominick Drake, Koch said. The Shelby County Coroner’s Office arrived and ruled that Dominick Drake was deceased.

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Department and the family have differing descriptions of the family relationship of the two individuals involved in the dispute.

The sheriff’s department first reported in a press release that the incident was a father-son domestic dispute, and when questioned, amended it to say that Ricky Drake was the adoptive father of Dominick Drake.

The family said that Ricky Drake is Dominick’s Drake’s step-grandfather and that it was not a father-son dispute. In a telephone conversation, the family said it is probably true that Dominick was Ricky’s Drake’s adopted son.

Koch said the investigation is continuing and no further information is being released at this time.

5 P.M. UPDATE: The Shelby County Sheriff’s Department is correcting its original press release on the shooting incident to accurately reflect the family relationship between Ricky Drake, 72, and Dominick Drake, 24.

The family states that Ricky Drake is not the father of Dominick Drake. He is a step grandfather. Sheriff Louie Koch said the sheriff’s department will be sending out a corrected press release shortly.
