City to hold contest to design bicentennial logo

COLUMBUS — The Columbus Area Bicentennial Steering Committee has announced that it is holding a design contest to select the official logo for the city’s bicentennial anniversary in 2021.

The committee is calling on local artists and designers to submit proposals for the logo that are reflective of the history and heritage of Columbus and Bartholomew County and capture diversity and other elements in the community, said Diane Doup, co-chair of the steering committee.

“One of the things we are excited about is to have local artists contribute their talents in helping us recognize a special time in our community,” she said. “The more we can recognize local talent, the better. We are excited about what people think about when they think about our history and where we are now and incorporating that into a visual.”

The winner of the contest will selected by the Bicentennial Executive Committee, which is chaired by Columbus Mayor Jim Lienhoop and includes representatives from Bartholomew County and 10 local organizations, according to a press release. The winning design is expected to be announced in February.

“We just really want the logo to embrace our diverse community while paying homage to our history as well,” Doup said. “There are so many beautiful elements in our community, whether that be art, design or the feel of the community. We feel that this is a wonderful opportunity for people who are creative to capture all of that.”

Tobi Herron, the other co-chair of the steering committee, said in a previous interview that this is a special anniversary for Columbus as the community prepares to reflect on 200 years of progress. The main goal of the bicentennial celebration is to foster unity and pride in the city of Columbus by getting local residents involved, Herron said.

“We want to make sure there are ways for everyone to engage and everyone to feel proud that they live in Columbus and to be a part of celebrating the history of it,” Herron said in a previous interview.
