Columbus and Bartholomew County reject Second Amendment Sanctuary proposal

Bartholomew County and Columbus, in a joint statement to the media, have said they will not consider any proposals for the county to be a Second Amendment Sanctuary.

According to the statement, city and county officials said it appears the request by a social media group seeking the designation is an attempt to usurp or supersede the authority of the courts.

The statement cites the Second Amendment and other court decisions that recognize an individual’s right to keep and bear arms as the reason that the sanctuary status is not needed.

“We do not see that this ordinance is in furtherance of our role or responsibility as representatives of local government within Bartholomew County and the City of Columbus, according to the statement.
