Staying Active / Gym providing exercise videos for seniors, others to use at home

At Deathproof CrossFit, Jase Robinson deals with plenty of athletes, including some senior citizens, in various forms of physical shape.

But with gyms and other workout facilities closed for the time being because of the coronavirus pandemic, Robinson had a little extra time on his hands. So he developed a “Deathproof CrossFit Seniors At-Home Program” plan geared primarily toward seniors that they can do at home.

“I thought while we have time to do this and not having classes, we would get something everybody could use,” Robinson said. “The seniors are the hardest hit because younger people can’t come around and see them and take them for a walk.”

Robinson and his partner Dree McNear also run a Rock Steady Boxing class for 25 to 30 South Central Indiana residents who have Parkinson’s disease.

“For them, exercise is medicine,” Robinson said. “It’s desperately important that they keep moving, so we were looking at something to keep them active.”

Two days after the gym was closed, Robinson, 50, put together a “Virusproof Fitness” program, which includes five daily exercise routines with video demonstrations, mobility and flexibility routines, along with macro-nutrient meal plans. Variations are provided for those with owning differing equipment levels, bodyweight routines and running-based workouts.

The 50 movements for the Seniors At-Home Program show people how to how to perform moves like jug lifts, lunges and squats. The program uses a library of exercise demonstrations created by CrossFit Inc. Daily exercise routines are delivered via the DeathproofCrossFit.com website.

“These movements are adapted for being at home,” Robinson said. “They use things like milk jugs and backpacks and couches. It’s getting up and sitting down and practicing those movements that people need to do every day. It’s not something that people are already fit are going to use, but it’s something that the seniors can use while they’re stuck at home.”

Both programs aren’t just for Deathproof CrossFit members. “It was really intended to be much more broad than for the membership of the gym,” Robinson said. “It’s for the whole community. We have this expertise, we should do what we can do to provide a community service while we have the time to do it.”
