Record set in mail-in ballot requests for primary

Thursday was another record-setting day for Bartholomew County election officials, with hundreds of voters requesting mail-in ballots for the June 2 primary before the statewide deadline.

A total of 781 Bartholomew County voters applied for mail-in ballots Thursday – the most requested in a single day in history, said Bartholomew County Clerk Jay Phelps. In total, voters requested 8,919 mail-in ballots.

As of Friday morning, county election officials had received 5,099 mail-in ballots — 474 more than the combined total for all presidential primaries since President Bill Clinton was seeking the Democratic nomination in 1992.

“Honestly, it’s unbelievable,” he said. “We were here until 1 o’clock last night. We had to get all the stamps ready. We had to print all the ballots for the right precincts. It was a lot of work, but it was worth it.”

“It’s history. We’re all witnessing it, no question about it,” he added later in the interview.
