Coalition keynote speaker from 2019 dies in Carmel motorcycle accident

COLUMBUS, Ind. — A featured speaker at the Community Education Coalition’s “Es Posible” event last October has died in a motorcycle accident in Carmel.

Grisel Barajas Espinoza, 31, was a passenger on a motorcycle driven by George H. Ruiz Gil, 30, which was involved in a crash at 10:14 p.m. Sunday at Hazel Dell Parkway and East 106th St., according to WISH TV, a Republic newsgathering partner. Gil was taken to St. Vincent Hospital with serious injuries.

Espinoza, a radio personality for Spanish-language station La Grande 105.1 FM in Indianapolis, was the keynote speaker in Columbus last year for the coalition event, which was held at the Columbus Learning Center. The event was held to show Latino students the benefits of obtaining a post-secondary education and career paths available to them in the community.

Espinoza, who was a content creator and on-air talent for Telemundo in Indianapolis, told students here about her struggles with cultural and language disengagement after she and her family came to Chicago from Mexico in the 1990s.
