Drag-racing crash causes multiple injuries in Jackson County

JACKSON COUNTY — The Jackson County Sheriff Department and Indiana State Police are investigating an accident involving two vehicles drag racing on County Road 550N.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Department received a 911 call around 10 p.m. Thursday about a rollover accident with injuries.

The accident occurred in the 4000 block of East County Road 550N, deputies said.

Jackson County Deputy Jordan Hawn arrived at the scene and observed a red 2006 Chevrolet pickup truck on its top in a field about 40 yards north of County Road 550N.
Jackson County Deputies Justin Amos and Alan Jones also responded to assist.

The driver of the Chevrolet pickup was Brandon M. Stuckwisch, 17, of Vallonia, deputies said. Stuckwisch and a front seat passenger were both ejected from the pickup during the crash. The front seat passenger was a 15-year-old male juvenile from Seymour. There were also two juvenile females in the back seat of the pickup. One female is 16 from Freetown and the other is 15 from Seymour.
Stuckwisch was airlifted to Methodist hospital with multiple injuries and was in critical condition, deputies said.
The three juvenile passengers were transported by Jackson County EMS to Schneck Medical
Center for treatment. The front seat passenger that was also ejected was later airlifted to
Methodist Hospital for his injuries. One of the female passengers was released from Schneck after being evaluated and the other female was still hospitalized Friday morning.

During the investigation deputies learned a second vehicle was involved in the accident. The other vehicle was a white 2004 Dodge Ram driven by Sidney L. Williams, 23 of Columbus.
Williams remained on scene after the accident to speak with the responding deputies. Williams had two passengers in his vehicle Darren A. Carr, 22, of Seymour and Bryce D. Bense, 18, of Seymour. No one in Williams’s vehicle sustained any injuries.
The deputies’ investigation of the crash has indicated the two vehicles involved had been drag racing on the county road prior to the crash. Both vehicles were traveling east on County Road 550N and contact was made between the two, deputies said.

Stuckwisch’s vehicle spun out of control and led to his vehicle rolling several times.
The accident investigation is still ongoing.

The Indiana State Police are assisting with the crash and reconstructing the incident.
