School nostalgia to be celebrated in Hope

HOPE — Nostalgia that just might transport residents of Flat Rock and Haw Creek townships back to their good old school days will become in plentiful supply this weekend.

The Yellow Trail Museum and Hope Visitors Center, 644 Main St., Hope, is inviting residents to share their memorabilia from their school days of yesteryear. The event will happen from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Organizers are looking for historic information and photographs regarding such things as the Old Hope School, Clifford School, The Hope Red Devils basketball teams and the Clifford Panthers basketball team.

There will also be a discussion on the history of what older Hope-area basketball fans know as a “pedal jet” — a tricycle accessorized to look like a flying jet, Main Street of Hope executive director Susan Thayer Fye said.

One of the younger children in the school district would be recruited to ride the contraption just ahead of the introduction of the Hauser basketball teams prior to a game, Thayer-Fye said.

While the original “pedal jet” disappeared some time ago, Thayer-Fye said another tricycle capable of being accessorized has been found, and work is underway to bring the tradition back.

Although it promises to be fund, Sunday’s event will be a meeting of a history discussion group that meets once a month to discuss various local topics, she said.

Participants are asked to bring any photos, news articles, and information they might possess to share with the group.
