Northside runner wins state middle school title

Aidan Jeffares won the boys race at last weekend’s Indiana Middle School State Championships.

Jeffares, an eighth-grader at Northside Middle School, was competing unattached. He ran 9 minutes, 32.1 seconds for 3,000 meters (1.9 miles) at LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute.

Northside’s Sierra Newell, also competing unattached, finished 11th in the girls race in 11:40.7.

East JV tops BNL

Ethan Duncan threw two touchdown passes and a 2-point conversion pass to lead the Columbus East junior varsity to a 28-14 Hoosier Hills Conference win against Bedford North Lawrence.

Duncan threw scoring passes of 20 yards to Nico Alvarez and 10 yards to Landon Jarvis. Bo Wagner ran 10 yards for a touchdown, and Javion Smith ran 20 yards for a score for the Olympians (5-2, 4-0).

Duncan’s 2-point conversion pass went to Tommy Anderson. Nathaniel Hedrick kicked two extra points.

Flames teams win

Three Columbus Flames teams went undefeated last weekend, and the Columbus Icemen finished second in a tournament in Owensboro, Kentucky.

The Flames 14U team beat the Cincy Swords McQuaid 4-2 and 5-1 and downed the Midwest Blackbirds 14U 5-2 and 7-4. Jack Warble netted seven goals and two assists, Colijah Kenney scored four goals, Dane Weinzapfel recorded two goals and five assists, Wyatt Warner posted three goals and two assists, Samuel McGhehey scored two goals, Kaitlyn Buickel had one goal and three assists, John Roberts had one goal and two assists, Cole Vreeland scored one goal, Westin Davis notched four assists, Blake Avery had two assists and Bryce McDonald added one assist. Zach Goggins and Jackson Wheatley each were in net two games.

The Flames 10U A squad beat Evansville Thunder 6-1 and 12-3 Owensboro Puckhogs 12-0 and 16-3. Brooks Larsh netted 11 goals and five assists, Rowan Correll recorded six goals and five assists, Ethan Neumann posted six goals and three assists, Thomas King tallied five goals and five assists, Carter Harris notched four goals and six assists, Maddox Coy had four goals and four assists, Carter Davis added four goals and three assists, Holden Thompson and Henry Schloemer each contributed two goals and two assists, Robert Orgass and Keaton Grube each had one goal and two assists, Canyon Long and Colby Payne each handed out two assists, and Kai Bergmann added one assist. Cayden Long and Canyon Long were in net two games each.

The Flames 12U A team beat Junior Fuel 12U Black 7-4 and 3-0. Keaton Russel scored four goals; River Degner netted three goals and one assist; Ryan McGhehey, Eduardo Aranda and Kaitlyn Netser all recorded one goal and one assist; Lance Kitterman had two assists and Sawyer Patterson and Will Jamerson each added one assist. Lane Barringer was in net both games.

The Icemen beat Northern Kentucky 3-1 and Owensboro Rampage 6-4 and tied the Evansville Thunder 0-0 to advance to the championship game against the Evansville Thunder, where they fell 3-1. Andrew Clark netted four goals and two assists, Brayson Bennett recorded three goals and four assists, John Ferguson notched one goal and two assists, Joe Neal tallied one goal and one assist, Caleb McGhehey scored one goal and Caden Graham and Barrett Mudd each had one assist. Cam Stattenfield and Ben Blantz were in net for two games each.
