Brinegar wins West Coast 5K; Cortez takes pair of thirds

Columbus resident and Indiana University redshirt sophomore Michael Brinegar won the Elite 5K Sunday in the West Coast Open Water Championships at Lake Las Vegas in Henderson, Nevada.

Brinegar finished in 54 minutes, 42.79 seconds. A day earlier, he finished third in the Elite 10K in 1:35:06.71, less than 8 seconds behind the winner, 2016 and 2021 United States Olympian Jordan Wilimovsky.

Nalanie Cortez, a Columbus North sophomore swimming for Club Olympia, finished third in both the Junior (16-and-under) 2.5K (30:55.90) and 5K (1:03.35.70). Club Olympia’s Ashley Freel finished 10th in the girls race in 32:48.44.

In the boys Junior Division, Columbus East sophomore and Club Olympia swimmer Brady Beyer finished 10th in 31:38.02.

Brinegar had qualified for the USA Swimming Open Water Nationals, and Beyer and Cortez had qualified for the USA Swimming Open Water Junior Nationals that were canceled earlier in 2020 because of COVID-19. The West Coast Open Water Championships served as the first major open water competition in 2020 and attracted most of the top senior and junior open water swimmers in the country and included swimmers from 19 states.

East JV wins HHC

The Columbus East junior varsity wrapped up an undefeated Hoosier Hills Conference season with a 37-8 win against Madison.

Tristan Davis returned a fumble 30 yards for a touchdown, Ethan Duncan threw a 20-yard scoring pass to Roland Ryan and ran 30 yards for a touchdown, Caaden Gault scored on a 5-yard run and Trenton Wicker threw a 20-yard TD pass to Ryan for the Olympian (7-2, 6-0)

Duncan threw a 2-point conversion pass to Tommy Anderson, Trevor Kennedy ran for a 2-point conversion and Nathaniel Hedrick kicked three extra points. Davis had two fumble recoveries, John Fife recovered a fumble and Anderson had an interception.

Bantams win 1 of 3

The Columbus Flames Bantams played in Louisville against the Louisville Ice Cardinals on Sunday, winning 3-2 and lost 4-1 a day after falling to the Irish Rovers 9-1. Dane Weinzapfel led the Flames Bantams with three goals; while Callijah Kenney netted one goal and one assist; Jack Warble scored one goal; and Cole Vreeland, Cam Edmonson and Hayden Johnson all had assist. Jackson Wheatley and Zach Goggins each were in net for 1 1/2 games.

The Flames Peewee B played in Louisville against the Louisville Ice Cardinals on Sunday, falling 10-2 and 8-0. Zane Lynch and Ashton Nguyen each scored one goal, and Ryan McGhehey and Lilly Donica each had one assist. Hudson Beckom was in net for both games.

The Flames Peewee A fell to the Afton Americans 8-1 and 4-2. Keaton Russel netted two goals and one assist, Eduardo Aranda added one goal and one assist and Sawyer Patterson had one assist. Lane Barringer was in recorded 36 saves in goal.

The Flames Squirt B team lost to the Cincy Swords 9-0 and 16-2. Nolan Sparkman and Preston Bell each scored one goal, and Daniel Wallace had an assist. Cayden Long was in net.

The Flames Squirt A team fell to the Irish Rovers AA 8-1 and 5-3. Keaton Grube, Rowan Correll, Holdon Thompson and Brooks Larsh all scored one goal; and Maddox Coy, Aaron Warble and Carter Harris all had one assist. Canyon Long and Hudson Beckom each were in net for one game.
